The stunning rock formation was named after the Libyan King of Numidia (present day Algeria) who fought a mighty battle against the occupying Romans, using the massive flat topped rock as a fortress. The mountain can be seen as far as 50 km (31 mi) away, rising 1200 m (3,937 ft) out of the Tunisia-Algerian border plains. It looks almost perfectly flat as if it was somehow been flattened by man. The inselberg appears barren but when you climb the top you can see Roman ruins, arches and walls, huge Roman cisterns dug deep into the stone to catch rain water and tiny beehive-like house dating from prehistoric times. In spring, its 800,000 sq m surface is covered with wild flowers.

The Flower Within a Flower

These relatively insect free plants can be propagated from root and branch cuttings. The basalt sea stack was formed by lava flows coming from the Grand Ronde Mountains millions of years ago. The rock used to be a part of the coastline but years of erosion have since separated it from the headland. It is a haven for many sea birds, including terns and puffins. For more than a hundred years, a dragon tree (Dracaena draco) has always been a local tourist attraction of the place. In fact, the interesting looking tree has become the symbol of Icod. Although no study has yet confirmed the age of the tree, it is believed to be standing there for thousands of years. The tree was described and illustrated in the “Atlas Picturesque” (1810) by German naturalist and explorer Alexander von Humboldt.

Eight Animals That Can Transmit Deadly Diseases to Humans

Mosquitoes are vectors of disease-causing viruses and parasites from person to person without catching the disease themselves. Yellow fever and dengue fever, both transmitted by the Aedes aegypti and Malaria brought by the Anopheles mosquitoes are of primary concern. Every year, mosquitoes are estimated to transmit disease to more than 700 million people in Africa, South America, Central America, Mexico and much of Asia with millions resulting to death. Most of the diseases are carried by the female mosquitoes. Other mosquito-transmitted viral diseases includes: Eastern equine encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis and West Nile virus.

The World's 10 Largest Buildings

The Venetian Macao is a 40-story, $2.4 billion luxury hotel and casino resort in Macau, China owned by the Las Vegas Sands Corporation. This species, Taxodium mucronatum is native to south of Mexico and southernmost Texas, USA at altitudes 300 through 2300 m (984-7545 ft) growing along riversides. The tree is very drought-tolerant and grows very fast which makes it a parks and gardens favorite plant. A Montezuma Cypress named Arbol del Tule (pictured here) in Oaxaca, Mexico, is known as the world’s stoutest tree which measures 11.42 m (37.45 ft) across. If measured as a smoothed out trunk, its diameter is said to be 9.8 m (32.15 ft), still slightly larger than the second stoutest tree, a Giant Sequoia 8.98 m (29.46 ft).

World's 10 Largest Church Buildings

The Sanctuary of Our Lady of Lichen is the largest church in Poland, the seventh in Europe and the tenth in the world. The falls are stunning, awe-inspiring, until you see people enjoying themselves in the most breathtaking feature of the falls called the Devil’s Swimming Pool. A natural pool was formed near the edge of the waterfall. Usually during the dry months of September and December, the river flow is at a safe level that people can swim as close as possible to the edge of the falls within the pool area. A natural rock wall keeps them from falling into the 360 feet gorge. It is safe enough that some people actually let their kids join the experience of a lifetime.

Animal Albinism: 10 Straight Facts

Albinism is a congenital condition (present from birth) characterized by partial or total lack of the pigment melanin that gives color to the skin, hair and eyes. It consists only of two leaves and a stem base with roots. Both leaves that grow from opposite sides of the stem will continue to grow and never drops and instead gets brown by the sun and torn by the wind which will eventually look like lots of individual leaves. The stem gets thicker rather than higher although it can grow up to six feet high and twenty-four feet wide. At the age of 20, cone-like flowers appear. The female plant produces up to 100 flowers in a season, while the male produces an abundance of pollen. Its lifespan is estimated to reach 2000 years.

The Devil's Plants

The Devil’s Claw is also known as Grapple Plant, Wood Spider and Unicorn Plant and is named for the miniature hooks that cover its fruit.
